Duke Riley, a cool and strikingly intelligent Brooklyn based artist, will give an Artist Talk at the Pizzuti Collection at 5:00 pm on Thursday, March 27, 2014. The Pizzuti Collection’s Artist Talk will give participants the unique opportunity to hear Riley discuss his work and talk with him about his artistic practice. A private party follows the Artist Talk until 7:00 pm, offering a chance to visit with the artist and view his works in the galleries.
In preparation for the Artist Talk, several works from Riley’s recent series Trading with the Enemy will be installed. Trading with the Enemy is a sympathetic complement to the Cuban Forever exhibition as it focuses on videos, paintings and drawings of homing pigeons trained by Riley to fly from Havana, Cuba to Key West, Florida carrying either cameras or Cuban cigars in custom made harnesses. The video See You at the Finish Line (2012-2013) is a particularly potent and humorous visual reminder of both how close and how far Cuba remains from the United States.
Ever the individualist, Riley has carved a niche for himself in the New York art scene through his smart, daring projects and his unique aesthetic. Riley’s work, whether drawing, sculpture, mosaic, or performance combines research and craftsmanship, accompanied by a relentless questioning of what it means to be accepted or rejected by society.
Duke Riley received his BFA in 1995 from the Rhode Island School of Design and his MFA in 2006 from the Pratt Institute. Riley is also a tattoo artist working out of the East River Tattoo studio in Brooklyn.
The Artist Talk is free to Pizzuti Collection members and is open to the public with the cost of admission to Pizzuti Collection ($10 adults).
